Matt Judon, 49ers Reportedly Agree to Practice Squad Contract After Nick Bosa Injury

Andrew PetersSep 28, 2026

Amid a plethora of defensive injuries, including one to Nick Bosa, the San Francisco 49ers are adding some depth to their defensive line.

Per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the team is signing pass rusher Matt Judon to the practice squad, and the veteran has an "early chance for elevation."

Judon, a fifth-round pick in 2016, spent the first five years of his career with the Baltimore Ravens, where he earned a pair of Pro Bowl nods. He then signed with the New England Patriots in 2021 and earned two more Pro Bowl honors in his first two years with the team.

Amid a contract dispute with the Patriots ahead of the 2024 season, New England traded him to the Atlanta Falcons. He signed with the Miami Dolphins last year and appeared in 13 games before being waived in December. He finished the year with the Buffalo Bills.

Judon finished the 2025 campaign with 19 tackles and one pass defended, marking the worst statistical year of his career in which he was healthy.

While Judon is perhaps past his prime, the 49ers need all the help they can get. Bosa is expected to miss several weeks because of a calf injury, adding to an injury report that also includes Romello Height (hand) and Mykel Williams (knee). Williams is working his way back from a torn ACL last year.

"With all of the injuries piling up over there, I think I can just come in and help until some of those guys get back," Judon told Arabia Tillery of ALL32.

Judon will have to work his way up to the active roster from the practice squad, but with all the injuries, that might not be too difficult for him.
