Nick Bosa Injured, Latest Rumors on 49ers Star's Timeline to Return from Calf Issue
Even amid a strong 2-0 start to the season, the hits keep coming for the San Francisco 49ers with Nick Bosa set to miss time due to a calf injury.
Per ESPN's Adam Schefter and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Bosa is expected to miss "a few weeks" after injuring his calf during Thursday's practice.
The report added Niners officials are still figuring out if Bosa will be placed on injured reserve.
Not including Bosa's situation, the 49ers already lead the NFL with 15 players currently on injured reserve, as well as two players on the physically unable to perform list. The group includes five defensive linemen — Alfred Collins, CJ West, Sam Okuayinonu, Andrew Farmer and Mikail Kamara.
An IR stint for Bosa would keep him out for at least four weeks. If the 49ers were to make a move prior to Sunday's matchup with the Arizona Cardinals, the earliest he could return is Week 7 against the Atlanta Falcons.
The 49ers' bye is in Week 8, which could factor into their strategy if it's determined Bosa needs to go injured reserve.
Mykel Williams, the No. 11 pick in the 2025 NFL draft, is on the physically unable to perform list as he continues to rehab from a torn ACL suffered in Week 9 last season.
There is good news for Williams after head coach Kyle Shanahan announced on Monday they will open his practice window next week and potentially putting him on track to play as soon as he is eligible in Week 5.
Even though Schefter noted Bosa was injured Thursday, he was officially listed as a DNP for the Niners' first practice of the week on Wednesday. He sat out their first practice going into Week 2 with a "Not injury related — resting; knee" designation.
There was some question about whether or not Bosa would be on the field for the start of the regular season as he was continuing to work his way back from a torn ACL. He didn't go through his first full practice until Sept. 2, eight days before their Week 1 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams.
Bosa played 36 of 61 defensive snaps against the Rams. He followed that up by being on the field for 40 of 59 defensive plays in Week 2 against the Miami Dolphins.
The 28-year-old recorded seven combined tackles, two tackles for loss and one quarterback hit through the first two games.
Keion White, Ogbo Okoronkwo and Khalid Kareem are currently the top four EDGE rushers on the Niners' active roster with Bosa injured.
After Sunday's matchup with the Cardinals, San Francisco's next two games are at home against the Denver Broncos and on the road against the Seattle Seahawks.
