Dolphins Trade for Packers QB Kyle McCord to Backup Willis After Quinn Ewers Deal, Return Revealed

After trading backup quarterback Quinn Ewers to the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Miami Dolphins have quickly found his replacement Kyle McCord.

The Dolphins sent the extra 2028 sixth-round draft pick that they received in the Ewers deal to the Green Bay Packers to acquire quarterback Kyle McCord, who will serve as the backup to starting signal-caller Malik Willis.

ESPN's Adam Schefter first reported the deal.

The acquisition of McCord continues the Green Bay-to-Miami pipeline, as Willis also played for the Packers before heading to South Beach. Former Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley is entering his first year as Dolphins head coach after being hired by new general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan, who previously worked in Green Bay's front office for over two decades.

A sixth-round pick in the 2025 NFL draft, McCord began his career with the Philadelphia Eagles before joining the Packers earlier this offseason. The 23-year-old has become a hot commodity in recent weeks thanks to his strong performance in the preseason. He played the entirety of Friday's preseason finale against the Arizona Cardinals, completing 22 of his 35 passes for 226 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions in a 42-38 victory.

Schefter added that despite McCord's impressive preseason, the Packers already have veteran signal-caller Tyrod Taylor in place as the backup to starting quarterback Jordan Love. Rather than holding on to McCord and continuing to develop him, Green Bay opted to flip him for a future draft pick.

The Dolphins are expected to go through a rebuild year in 2026, so there's a chance that McCord will get to see the field at some point this season as Miami tries to evaluate its best course for the future under Hafley.
