Tyrese Maxey Talks Who Takes Last Shot for 76ers After LeBron James, Jaylen Brown Additions

Philadelphia 76ers star Tyrese Maxey weighed in on the team's No. 1 scoring option in clutch scenarios following the offseason additions of LeBron James and Jaylen Brown.

"I think it depends on what the situation is, you know what I'm saying? I think we have confidence in a lot of different guys," Maxey said in an interview with HoopsHype's Sam Yip. "I think people want to say VJ is our fifth option, but last year he took a lot of shots in the clutch. He made a lot of shots in the clutch. There was a couple times, where I got doubled and Joel [Embiid] got doubled and we had to kick it out to VJ [Edgecombe] and he had to make a shot. It's going to be different people. We're going to see how it goes and see how it flows."

Maxey also explained that nobody on the 76ers' new-look starting lineup can have an ego in order for the team to be successful.

"I think the biggest thing is we can't have anybody, nobody on this team can have an ego," Maxey told Yip. "We have two guys that have won regular-season MVPs, two guys that have won Finals MVPs, multiple gold medal winners on this team, multiple 25-plus points per game, All-Stars, All-NBA. We're all pretty accomplished. So the ego has to drop and you have to do it collectively."

After wrapping up a 45-37 finish and advancing to the second round of the playoffs last season, the 76ers acquired Brown in a blockbuster trade with the Boston Celtics on July 1 before landing James in free agency on July 24.

They're set to join a starting lineup that already includes Maxey, Joel Embiid and VJ Edgecombe.

It'll be intriguing to see how Philadelphia's pecking order on offense develops with two new stars entering the mix.

Brown and Maxey ranked No. 2 and No. 3 among all players in field-goal attempts per game last season, respectively. Meanwhile, Embiid has served as the 76ers' leading scorer throughout the majority of his career and averaged 26.9 points on a nightly basis during his 2025-26 campaign.

James also has plenty of experience as an offensive engine and has remained productive in close games, shooting 57.6 percent from the field in clutch situations last year (via NBA.com).

The Sixers will open the 2026-27 season against the New York Knicks on Oct. 20.
