Christian Gonzalez Offered Historic Patriots Contract Extension Ahead of 2026 NFL Season, Kraft Says

Adam WellsJul 25, 2026

Coming off an All-Pro selection in 2024 and a Pro Bowl nod in 2025, the New England Patriots want to make Christian Gonzalez the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL.

During the team's first public training camp practice on Saturday, Patriots owner Robert Kraft told reporters they have offered Gonzalez an extension that would make him the top-paid cornerback and highest-paid player in franchise history.

Even though Gonzalez could holdout as part of negotiations, head coach Mike Vrabel told reporters on Friday his expectation is the 24-year-old will be on the field and participating in drills during training camp.

Kraft didn't specify the exact terms of the Patriots' offer to Gonzalez, but it is possible to determine the floor based on the team's history and cornerback contracts.

The richest contract the Patriots have ever given out was the four-year, $104 million free-agent deal signed by Milton Williams in March 2025.

Trent McDuffie is currently the highest-paid cornerback at $31 million annually on his four-year, $124 million deal with the Los Angeles Rams that was signed after he was acquired in a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, one thing that appears to be holding up talks between Gonzalez and the Patriots is Devon Witherspoon's negotiations with the Seattle Seahawks.

Witherspoon, the sixth pick in 2023, has been offered an extension from the Seahawks worth more than $30 million annually.

Both players are well-regarded throughout the league. In a survey of scouts, coaches and executives of the top 10 cornerbacks going into the 2026 season conducted by ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, Gonzalez came in third and Witherspoon was fourth.

Fowler specifically pointed out Gonzalez's impressive performance in the playoffs that helped the Patriots reach the Super Bowl. He allowed just 14 completions on 36 targets, marking the lowest completion percentage against (38.8 percent) for a cornerback in the playoffs since at least 2018.

This offseason marks the first time Gonzalez, the No. 17 overall pick in the 2023 draft, is eligible to sign an extension.

Gonzalez still has two years remaining on his rookie deal after the Patriots picked up his fifth-year option for 2027 in April. The option year pays him a guaranteed $18.1 million.

Since playing just four games due to a shoulder injury as a rookie, Gonzalez has started 30 games over the past two years. He has recorded 128 combined tackles, two tackles for loss, 21 passes defensed and two interceptions since the start of the 2024 season.
