Christian Gonzalez 5th-Year Option to Be Exercised by Patriots Amid Contract Talks, Vrabel Says

Doric SamMar 31, 2026

After their run to Super Bowl 60, the New England Patriots plan on keeping one of their top young defensive players.

New England head coach Mike Vrabel told reporters on Tuesday that the team will exercise cornerback Christian Gonzalez's fifth-year option while noting the two sides are in negotiations on a long-term contract.

"Yes," Vrabel said, per Mark Daniels of MassLive.com. "If we haven't picked it up, we should pick it up."

The fifth-year option would pay Gonzalez $18.1 million in 2027, per Spotrac.

The 2023 first-round pick became eligible for an extension for the first time this offseason, and ESPN's Mike Reiss previously reported that there was "an expected mega-extension" coming for Gonzalez.

After playing just four games as a rookie due to season-ending shoulder surgery, Gonzalez quickly proved that he's a franchise cornerstone for the Patriots. He was named second-team All-Pro in his first full season in 2024, and he earned his first Pro Bowl selection this past season after posting 69 total tackles and 10 pass deflections.

Gonzalez never got the chance to play in his first Pro Bowl, as the Patriots made a run to the Super Bowl in their first year under head coach Mike Vrabel. While New England suffered a 29-13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, Gonzalez was one of the team's lone bright spots, dazzling fans with three impressive pass breakups.

Gonzalez is a rising star who could be a difference-maker for years to come, so it'd be a smart move for the Patriots to reward him with an extension.
