Reds GM Spills Coffee on Chase Burns' Contract, Delays Signing of $105M Deal
Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Chase Burns' signing of his contract extension was delayed Saturday because Reds general manager Brad Meador spilled coffee on it, The Athletic's C. Trent Rosecrans reported.
"That took some time to print a new one out," Burns told reporters. "That was easy."

Burns signed a seven-year, $105 million extension that runs through 2033.
The 23-year-old Burns, who is pitching in his second MLB season, just went to the All-Star Game for the first time after posting an 11-1 record with a 2.54 ERA (1.11 WHIP) and 118 strikeouts in 18 starts (102.2 innings).
Cincinnati selected the former Wake Forest star with the second overall pick in the 2024 MLB draft. He started in High-Single A in 2025 and rose up the ranks one by one until he made his major league debut on June 24, a little less than one year after Burns was initially drafted.
Naturally, the Reds wanted to extend him, given his tremendous season and potential. While they encountered a very slight caffeine-related delay during the signing process, Burns is now officially aboard for the next seven-plus seasons.
