2026 MLB All-Star Game Top Storylines to Track for Both Rosters

Zach BuckleyJul 13, 2026

The first half of the 2026 MLB season is in the books, which can only mean one thing.

It's time for the Midsummer Classic, y'all!

The best and brightest of the baseball world have descended upon Philadelphia for the planet's greatest exhibition of elite baseball talent. The All-Star Game is here, or rather it will be come Tuesday night.

That makes this the perfect time for stage-setting, then, so we'll follow all of the need-to-know scheduling particulars with a look at the most compelling storylines for both rosters.

All-Star Game Schedule

1 of 3

AL Storylines

Los Angeles Angels v Minnesota Twins

Mike Trout's return

An All-Star lock for a decade-plus, Trout missed the designation the past two seasons as the injury bug limited his appearances and plagued his production. But the 34-year-old is back—and at the perfect time, as this game will be held fewer than 50 miles away from his hometown of Millville, N.J.

This will be Trout's 12th All-Star appearance and 11th time as a starter. He entered intermission with 18 home runs (second-most among AL outfielders), seven steals (his most since 2019) and a .390 on-base percentage (his highest since 2021).

Justin Verlander send-off

While hip and hamstring injuries will prevent Verlander from taking the mound, the 43-year-old will be in attendance as a "Legend Pick" from Commissioner Rob Manfred. It's a fitting nod to the future Hall of Famer, as Verlander recently announced he will retire upon this campaign's conclusion:

Verlander, who threw his first MLB innings back in 2005, is a 10-time All-Star, a three-time Cy Young and a two-time World Series champion. He was crowned AL MVP in 2011. Among active players, he is the career leader in...well, a whole host of categories, including wins (266), complete games (26), strikeouts (3,554) and innings (3,571.1). A tribute is clearly deserved and should be cherished.

An infusion of rookie talent

While a few regulars dominate the headline portion of these storylines, one of the most fascinating developments in the AL has been the fast-track to stardom for a number of MLB freshman.

Five different rookies populate the AL All-Star roster. The Cleveland Guardians have a pair of rookie All-Stars in second baseman Travis Bazzana and starting pitcher Parker Messick, as do the Chicago White Sox with first baseman Munetaka Murakami and outfielder Tristan Peters. There's also Detroit Tigers shortstop Kevin McGonigle.

The hometown heroes

While the Los Angeles Dodgers technically matched the Philadelphia Phillies with an MLB-high six All-Star selections apiece, the Phils might feel like they have the real bragging rights. Because they could've easily had a seventh honoree, only starting pitcher Zack Wheeler declined a late invite while saying he felt "disrespected" by how the process played out.

And, in fact, Wheeler's declination is the reason the Dodgers wound up with six, as southpaw starter Justin Wrobleski wound up with that spot.

Even without Wheeler, the Phils will be well represented in front of their home fans. First baseman Bryce Harper, designated hitter Kyle Schwarber, outfielder Brandon Marsh, starting pitchers Cristopher Sánchez and Jesús Luzardo and reliever Jhoan Duran will all take part in the festivities.

The breakouts

A certain amount of spotlight falls every year upon the crop of first-time All-Stars. While there are plenty in both leagues, there is also an exciting collection of them among the NL's position players.

The youngest of the lot is Cincinnati Reds corner infielder Sal Stewart, who came into this campaign with 18 big-league outings under his belt. The 22-year-old is nevertheless All-Star-bound after a first half in which he hit 19 homers, stole 11 bases and totaled 116 combined runs and RBI.

There's also 24-year-old St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Jordan Walker, 25-year-old Dodgers outfielder Andy Pages, 25-year-old Atlanta Braves backstop Drake Baldwin and 26-year-old Cardinals catcher and designated hitter Iván Herrera.

It's always exciting to see the stars of tomorrow, especially when they're already stars of today.
