Top Prospects
2 of 2
Brendan Lawson, SS, Florida
Lawson is a hard-hitting player. He makes great contact, can pull the ball, and has potential for 20-plus home runs.
A strong defender with a big arm, he probably projects as a third baseman in the pros, where he would be better suited based on his physical tools. He is not a speedster, but he does possess situational awareness and rarely overthinks the situation.
Above all, it is Lawson's power that remains his greatest asset and will have him at or near the top of draft boards, as long as he does not take a step back this season for the Gators.
Dax Whitney, RHP, Oregon State
If Whitney can find consistent control, he has the raw upside to be the top pick in next year's draft, thanks to his hard-throwing and what Fueled by Sports calls, "a natural downhill plane and extension, giving his pitches added life and making him difficult to square up when he's in rhythm."
When he throws low, he is nearly impossible for opposing batters to hit in the air, an asset that leads to ground balls and easy outs for the defense.
He throws a slider and a change-up that give him an arsenal to combat opposing batters on either side of the plate.
He needs to control his stuff, his inexplicable misses on the right need to be shored up, but he is a big, talented player with the highest upside of any pitcher in next year's class.
Dylan Seward, SS, Norco High School (CA)
Arguably the best defensive shortstop prospect in 2027, Seward has great instincts and a long frame that help him field otherwise difficult balls.
That he has strong pitch recognition and can hit the ball around the field, per Fueled by Sports, is a tremendous asset that should earn him consistent playing time at the next level.
He is fast, can snag extra bases, and shows great acceleration around the base path.
He might be the youngest of the bunch, but if Seward can build on an already impressive framework and arsenal, do not be surprised to hear his name called first next July. He is the most well-rounded athlete of the top prospects.
