Kyler Murray, J.J. McCarthy Vikings QB Battle Discussed by HC O'Connell Ahead of NFL Training Camp
Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell weighed in on the battle between Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy for the team's starting quarterback job.
"I'm not really familiar with a closed competition," O'Connell said during an appearance on The Dan Patrick Show (h/t NFL.com's Nick Shook). "I've heard that everyone's fascinated with that aspect of it, but here's what I would say. ... Really the goal going into this offseason was to elevate the quarterback position because when we have a certain standard of play that we feel like we have multiple guys in that room that we feel are capable of reaching that standard, the Minnesota Vikings win football games. The best way to achieve that is having a daily attempt to have guys push each other and not just always need the outside noise or not always need what the narratives may be.

"Let's roll the ball out there, and let's try to help the Minnesota Vikings get better."
McCarthy served as Minnesota's starting quarterback in 2025, but struggled during his first year under center. He completed 57.6 percent of his throws for 1,632 yards and 11 touchdowns compared to 12 interceptions in 10 games.
The Vikings finished with a 9-8 overall record, missing the playoffs.
They ended up signing Murray to a one-year contract in free agency after he was released by the Arizona Cardinals.
While Murray was limited to five appearances in 2025 due to a foot injury, he brings experience to Minnesota's position battle with 87 total starts under his belt.
The two-time Pro Bowler is also just one season removed from a 2024 campaign in which he threw for 3,851 yards and 21 touchdowns while getting picked off 11 times. He also rushed for 572 yards and five scores.
Still, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reported that Murray "looked uncomfortable at times" in offseason workouts with the Vikings as he learned a new offense.
Both McCarthy and Murray will look to gain an edge in the quarterback competition once Minnesota's training camp begins, as veterans are set to report on July 28.
