MLB Prospects Reportedly Won't Attend the Draft, How Controversial Rule Proposal Could Impact Future
When the 2026 MLB draft takes place this weekend in Philadelphia as part of the MLB All-Star festivities, the league's future stars reportedly won't be on hand to experience it.
According to Johnny Flores Jr. and Sam Blum of The Athletic, no draft-eligible players will be in attendance for the 2026 MLB draft, marking the second consecutive year that has happened.
Flores and Blum noted that there are multiple reasons for that, ranging from the prospects wanting to experience the draft at home with large groups of family and friends to the prospects not wanting to damage their negotiating leverage.
The latter point primarily applies to high school prospects since they have the option of attending college rather than signing with the team who drafts them if they aren't amenable to the offer they receive.
That dynamic could soon change, though, if Major League Baseball decides to move forward with some major alterations that have been proposed for the draft.
Per Flores and Blum, the new draft idea would see it go from 20 to 12 rounds and it would see high school players become ineligible for the draft, thus limiting it to college-age players.
Grady Emerson, who is expected to be the top high school player off the board in the 2026 MLB draft and could potentially go No. 1 overall, expressed his belief to The Athletic that those changes would result in more players attending the draft.
"You're going to see more guys who are going to show up because it's almost like guaranteed, you're either in college for two years and now you're getting drafted or [you're going to go back]," Emerson said. "I think you'll see more guys show up, especially the guys who are juniors and seniors."
The MLB draft lags far behind the NFL, NBA and NHL drafts in terms of popularity, television presentation and overall importance to the fanbase, and it can be argued that the players not being present is part of the reason why.
If the proposed draft changes become part of the next collective bargaining agreement and lead to more players attending, however, perhaps the perception regarding the MLB draft will start to shift.
