Mason's 12th Round TKO 😱

Naomi Osaka Beats Aryna Sabalenka, Updated Wimbledon Women's Tennis Bracket, Results

Scott PolacekJul 5, 2026

Naomi Osaka is three wins away from the first Wimbledon title of her career.

The No. 14 seed in the ladies' singles draw stunned top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6(2), in Sunday's blockbuster fourth-round showdown. She will now face No. 10 seed Karolina Muchova in the quarterfinals.

Osaka was dominant with her serve throughout and did not lose a single service game. That allowed her to control the match with just a handful of break opportunities in the opening set and an overpowering performance in the second-set tiebreaker.

In all, Osaka enjoyed an 8-5 advantage in aces and won a head-turning 87 percent of her first-service points. She also tallied 21 winners to Sabalenka's 15 and was the better player throughout the match.

A round of 16 matchup with Sabalenka was nothing new for Osaka, who advanced to the fourth round at Roland Garros for the first time in her career earlier this year only to lose to the top seed.

This was also Osaka's first time advancing to the fourth round at Wimbledon in her career, and she was rewarded with the daunting task of going against a dominant opponent who already defeated her in their previous three matchups this year. In fact, Osaka's only head-to-head win over Sabalenka coming into Sunday's match came way back in 2018.

"I think from my end, I don't mind playing someone recently," Osaka told reporters. "Even if I look at my results, I have only lost to like her and Iga [Swiatek] for the past couple months. ... Also, [Sabalenka is] the No. 1 player in the world. If there is someone I had to lose to, I would pick that ranking position.

"If anything, I would say I learned from all of those matches, so hopefully I can apply, if I do play her."

She looked like she learned plenty out of the gates Sunday.

Osaka cruised to a 6-2 victory in the first set behind two early breaks. Sabalenka showed obvious frustration with the developments, but Osaka was in full control thanks to two timely break points and a handful of perfectly placed winners.

She even mixed in three aces in the opening set and dictated the tone in a way she failed to at Roland Garros.

Despite frustration that had Sabalenka hitting herself in the head with her own racket at one point, it was just a matter of time before the top seed started playing like it. And she rediscovered her serve in critical moments and turned away two break points from Osaka as the entire second set remained on serve until the tiebreak.

But the tiebreak belonged to Osaka, which was fitting because she was the better player and earned a quarterfinals matchup against Muchova.
