New Jalen Duren Rumors Update Pistons' Contract Offer, Stance on Potential Sign-and-Trade
The Detroit Pistons reportedly have no interest in trading Jalen Duren away.
ESPN's Marc J. Spears reported Tuesday the Eastern Conference team offered the restricted free agent what it sees as "the most lucrative contract possible" and "will match any potential offer sheet he signs."
What's more, Spears added the Pistons "are not interested in any sign and trade deals."
This comes after NBA insider Chris Haynes reported Monday the Pistons and Duren were a "sizable distance apart in negotiations" with the big man scheduled to meet with the Sacramento Kings as a possible sign-and-trade destination.
Sam Amick of The Athletic reported the Los Angeles Lakers were "another sign-and-trade scenario" with a scheduled meeting.
Yet it seems like the Pistons don't plan on it reaching that point.
On the surface, it would make sense that Detroit doesn't want to part with Duren. He is just 22 years old and was a major reason the team finished with the best record in the Eastern Conference last season.
Duren was an All-Star and an All-NBA Third Team selection who averaged 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds a game while shooting 65 percent from the field.
Still, his playoff performance left plenty to be desired, especially during the Pistons' second-round loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. He failed to score in double figures in four of the seven games, including the decisive seventh one when he posted seven points on 3-of-7 shooting from the field.
He also wasn't as effective on the boards and was an offensive liability for extended stretches because of his lack of an outside shot. He either clogged the driving lanes for Cade Cunningham and others or was someone the Cavaliers could leave open and double elsewhere when he did drift away from the basket.
At his age, it is still fair to expect improvement as he continues to gain more experience in the NBA. He had a career-best season in 2025-26 and would likely benefit from additional continuity if he does remain in Detroit.
The front office surely knows that and reportedly doesn't want him going elsewhere in a sign-and-trade move.
