Latest on LeBron, Luka's Relationship Revealed in New Lakers Rumors After NBA Free-Agency Decision

Timothy RappJun 30, 2026

LeBron James' decision to leave the Los Angeles Lakers this offseason reportedly didn't come down to any tension with Luka Dončić, the new face of the franchise.

According to Dan Woike of The Athletic, "There might be an instinct here to think that Dončić helped push James out the door, but league sources who know both, who were granted anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the situation, insist the two players had no personal issues with one another. James, after all, went to the Lakers, and said Dončić should have his name introduced last in the starting lineups. And this summer, LeBron and Luka shared text messages about golf, a hobby they've both picked up in the past year."

That doesn't mean the reality of making it work with two superstars didn't offer a host of complications.

As Woike wrote, "Could the Lakers ever truly be Dončić's team if a player of James' stature and accomplishments was still there? Could James ever really feel valued by the Lakers when they made a trade for a player to be the new franchise face without consulting him (sending out his best friend on the team [Anthony Davis] in the process). For a year and a half, the sides made it work as best as they could."

Those complications were being chronicled last summer as well.

Last July, ESPN's Ramona Shelburne and Brian Windhorst noted that it "did not go down easily" for James when the Lakers made a number of decisions that clearly signaled they were transitioning to a Dončić-focused era. James wasn't given "significant notice" when the Lakers traded for Dončić, for one. They immediately tried to follow that up by acquiring Mark Williams to pair with Dončić, the sort of franchise center James and Anthony Davis had previously requested (the deal ultimately fell through). And the organization didn't offer James an extension last summer, leaving him instead to hit free agency this offseason after picking up his player option for the 2025-26 season.

Then there was the offseason meeting between Dončić, his manager Lara Beth Seager, Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka and head coach JJ Redick in May 2025, when the four reportedly spoke about the team's roster-building strategy centered around complementing Dončić's skillset. James, very notably, was not in attendance, another sign that the Dončić era had begun in earnest.

There seemingly wasn't any tension between Dončić and James throughout the 2025-26 season, but LeBron's uncertain future nonetheless hung over the proceedings. The announcement that he wouldn't be returning on Tuesday felt closer to inevitability than surprise.
