Bradley Beal, Giannis' Heat Reportedly Have Mutual Interest in Latest NBA Free Agency Rumors
The Miami Heat will need to surround Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo with shooters if they are going to live up to their potential, and they are reportedly interested in a high-profile one after Monday's developments.
Shams Charania reported Bradley Beal declined his $5.6 million player option for next season with the Los Angeles Clippers.
That makes him an unrestricted free agent, and Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints reported he and the Heat "hold mutual interest" after he has "been a rumored trade target" over the past couple seasons.
Siegel suggested whether Beal ends up in Miami could come down to his willingness to accept a minimum contract since the team "will be pursuing several other options" as well and may look to offer its mid-level exception elsewhere.
There was a time when Beal would have been one of the most notable additions in the league, but durability has been a significant concern of late.
He played just six games last season with the Clippers because of a fractured left hip that required surgery. He also hasn't reached the 60-game mark since the 2018-19 campaign.
A 33-year-old Beal coming off a major surgery likely won't return to the All-Star form he displayed at times with the Washington Wizards, including when he was an All-NBA Third Team selection in 2020-21 who averaged 31.3 points per game.
Still, the Heat wouldn't need him to be a go-to option like that in their offense with Antetokounmpo and Adebayo.
Instead, he could capitalize on the openings that will come when opposing defenses focus on the two primary stars. Beal still connected on 36.8 percent of his three-pointers in minimum action last season and would likely get even better looks in Miami.
But he may need to be willing to take a pay cut to make it happen.
