A split between the Grizzlies and Morant has been on the horizon for a while, so the trade doesn't come as much of a surprise. There were rumors of him being traded at the deadline, but he ultimately stuck around through the end of the year.
Morant's trade value wasn't exactly through the roof, as his injury history and lofty salary reportedly kept teams from doing business with Memphis. The Blazers ultimately decided to buy low on a player who still has some potential, and they hope Morant can return to All-Star form.
The former No. 2 overall pick in 2019, Morant appeared on his way to stardom early on in his career. He was the leading man on a team that reached the playoffs three times and won a series in 2022.
But injuries and off-the-court issues quickly crept up on Morant's pending stardom. He played just nine games during the 2023-24 campaign and missed 32 games the following year.
Last season, he appeared in just 20 contests, posting 19.5 points, 8.1 assists and 3.3 rebounds per game, his worst statistical year since his second season in the league.
His recent injury struggles, plus a $42 million cap hit, led to Morant's value decreasing tremendously as Memphis tried to move him.
But all hope isn't lost for the two-time All-Star. After all, he's just 26 years old and, in theory, is still in his athletic prime. Morant will also be placed in a backcourt alongside two veterans in Damian Lillard and Jrue Holiday, and those two should help get him back on track.
Considering most teams wanted nothing to do with Morant, the Grizzlies got a pretty good haul in return for the former face of their franchise.
Grant is past his prime at 32 years old, but he put up 18.6 points per game last year and is on a relatively friendly contract. Murray has yet to establish himself as a rotation player, but he's still on a rookie deal, which makes him a low-risk addition.
