Zach Werenski Addresses Blue Jackets Future After Stars, Lightning, Maple Leafs Trade Rumors

Scott PolacekJul 1, 2026

With Zach Werenski's future with the Columbus Blue Jackets generating no shortage of headlines in recent days, the defenseman and general manager Don Waddell each released statements Wednesday explaining the situation.

"Ideally, this wouldn't have become such a public thing," Werenski said, in part. "I want to win and I want to do that in Columbus. ... It has been my home for the past 10 years and I have always been proud to be a Blue Jacket."

As for Waddell, he explained the team found a trade it liked and presented it to Werenski. However, he then "informed us that he didn't want to leave Columbus. He has invested a great deal in this organization and after coming close and falling short the past two seasons, his desire is to win here and get this team back into the playoffs."

Bold Predictions for Free Agency 🔮

While Werenski's contract runs through the 2027-28 season, his future with the only NHL team he has ever known was a major talking point after the 2025-26 campaign.

Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic reported in June that Columbus "started listening to teams calling" regarding the defenseman and was "aware that the Norris Trophy winner is unlikely to extend past his deal."

Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet also reported in June there was "a lot of noise" and "intensified" speculation regarding trade talks well before the Blue Jackets were eligible to give him a contract extension on July 1, 2027.

He was also connected to the Tampa Bay Lightning and Toronto Maple Leafs as possible destinations.

Friedman then reported on Wednesday the Blue Jackets and Dallas Stars reached a verbal agreement that would have sent Werenski to the Western Conference team for a return package that featured Thomas Harley. However, Werenski vetoed it with his full no-move clause.

That is presumably the deal Waddell referenced in his statement.

Following that report, Darren Dreger of TSN reported the defenseman, his agent and Waddell met "to clear the air and calm things down."

According to Dreger, Werenski was "comfortable going back" with a trade not on the immediate radar even though one could be presented to him.

Unfortunately for Columbus, a star player staying put is actually something of a change.

After winning its first and only playoff series in franchise history in 2019, it has lost headline players such as Artemi Panarin, Sergei Bobrovsky, Seth Jones and Pierre-Luc Dubois, among others.

With consistent turnover when it comes to franchise cornerstones and star players, it has been difficult for the franchise to generate any type of long-term momentum when it comes to building a contender.

And while getting something in return for Werenski before he potentially left in free agency down the line may have been an ideal path, losing one of the best defensemen in the league certainly wouldn't help the franchise's short-term outlook in the Eastern Conference.

Werenski won the Norris Memorial Trophy as the NHL's top defenseman last season after finishing second in voting during the 2024-25 campaign. His recent consistency has been notable, and he finished the 2025-26 season with 81 points on 59 assists and 22 goals.

In the process, he became the 10th defensemen in NHL history to lead his team in scoring in back-to-back campaigns and tied Panarin's franchise record for assists in a single season.

Werenski, who helped lead Team USA to a gold medal in the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics, is also just 28 years old. There is no reason to expect any drop in production in the immediate future, which would have made losing him all the more difficult for the Blue Jackets.

For now, one of the NHL's top defensemen who is largely just missing extensive postseason experience on his resume is staying put.

Now it is up to him and the rest of the Blue Jackets to find some of that postseason success before his future is once again a talking point.
