Sophie Cunningham Sounds Off on Caitlin Clark's Treatment in Video, Calls on WNBA to Protect Star
Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham isn't pleased with the way teammate Caitlin Clark has been officiated as of late.
"Unfortunately, this type of s--t happens every single game to her and the league and the refs do absolutely nothing about it," Cunningham said on her Show Me Something podcast (2:41 mark).
"You see the videos of literally kneeing and cheap-shotting C in the throat," she added. "If she did that to any of our teammates we would be pissed. But they're definitely targeting her and the league and the refs do nothing to protect her."
During Indiana's 111-109 loss to the Phoenix Mercury on Wednesday, the fist of Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas appeared to press down on Clark's throat while she was on the ground.
While Thomas later received a flagrant foul 2 and a one-game suspension following a review by the WNBA, a foul wasn't called at the time.
Fever head coach Stephanie White was upset with the lack of a foul call after Wednesday's game.
"We have a generational talent and a WNBA superstar who had two cheap shots in this game that weren't called," White told reporters. "I can say it again, absolutely unacceptable."
Clark has been fouled 6.7 times per game this season, the second-highest average in the WNBA behind four-time MVP A'ja Wilson.
Still, Clark is averaging 21.2 points and 8.2 assists per game on 43.0/34.4/85.4 shooting splits in 2026.
