Bulls Shouldn't Trade Josh Giddey Amid Latest NBA Rumors Around Wolves' Interest
One of the bright spots for the Chicago Bulls this season was Josh Giddey, who averaged 17 points, 8.3 rebounds, 9.1 assists, and a steal and, as a result, he has garnered attention from interested teams this offseason.
Darren Wolfson of KSTP reported that the Minnesota Timberwolves were interested in acquiring the 23-year-old guard.
With Minnesota making a blockbuster trade Thursday for Charlotte's LaMelo Ball, it is unknown if that same interest remains. Even if it does, the Bulls should resist the urge, and offers, to trade one of their franchise cornerstones.
New head coach Tiago Splitter employs a European style of basketball, with up-tempo pacing and space creation. There are few better transitional players in the league than Giddey. He would become the centerpiece of that offense for Chicago and, at least theoretically, improve upon his already strong play.
Even with a cap hit of $25 million, the Bulls will have enough space to acquire free agents and build around Giddey without worrying that they need to shed payroll.
Unless new Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Bryson Graham can get an astronomical haul in return for the Australian player, one that would forever change the fortunes of the team for the better, keeping him to pair with first-round draft picks Caleb Wilson and Dailyn Swain is not only the right option, it is the only one.
Especially when he has shown steady improvement every season of his NBA career.
Giving up pieces like Giddey when your franchise is attempting its latest rebuild is not a move most executives come back from if it does not pan out and it is not a move the Bulls organization should be in any hurry to make.
