Final Four MOP Elliot Cadeau Makes Decision on CBB Future After Dusty May Leaves Michigan for Mavs

Joseph ZuckerJun 25, 2026

As the school examines all of the possible candidates to replace coach Dusty May, Michigan at least won't have to replace the most notable holdover from last year's championship squad.

ESPN's Jeff Borzello reported guard Elliot Cadeau is staying with the Wolverines for the 2026-27 season. The Final Four Most Outstanding Player appeared to confirm as much on social media:

With May leaving to coach the Dallas Mavericks, players on Michigan's roster or signed to the Wolverines will have an opportunity to explore all of their options. That window won't open for a few more weeks since Mike Boynton Jr. is taking over on an interim basis.

At such a late juncture, losing any personnel would be a big blow for the reigning national champions. There just aren't many viable ways to backfill vacancies on the roster.

This adds to the difficulty presented by the exits of May along with the top three scorers (Yaxel Lendeborg, Morez Johnson Jr. and Aday Mara) from a season ago.

Because of that turnover, Cadeau will occupy a big role in Michigan's backcourt.

Having transferred in from North Carolina, he averaged 10.5 points and 5.9 assists across 40 appearances last year. He had a double-double (13 points and 10 assists) in the semifinal victory over Arizona and scored a game-high 19 points in the title game against UConn.

For a lot of the same reasons why Michigan is potentially in a tough spot, Cadeau and others may not have many great options if they were to enter the portal. Rosters are pretty much set, so coaches don't have scholarship slots to easily hand out in mid-summer.

Cadeau's decision could be a promising sign toward Boynton's efforts to keep everyone together in Ann Arbor.
