Jaylen Brown Trade Decision Must Come Quickly for Celtics Amid NBA Rumors
The 2026-27 NBA calendar won't even officially begin until July 1. However, the offseason has gotten off to a rapid-fire start that has left the Boston Celtics fighting to keep up.
The first big domino of the offseason came just before the draft, when the Milwaukee Bucks agreed to trade Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Miami Heat in exchange for a package of picks and players. Boston made a strong push to land Giannis and made All-Star Jaylen Brown the centerpiece of their offer.
The Bucks, it would seem, were interested in Brown but were also afraid that he could follow Antetokounmpo's path and push for an exit.

Lakers Trade for Yves Missi Could Help Luka
According to Sam Amick and Eric Nehm of The Athletic, Milwaukee was afraid that "history might repeat itself"
Now, the Celtics face the tricky task of trying to sort the future of a centerpiece player—one who delivered a championship and was named Finals MVP just two years ago—who has effectively been told that his team had its eye on someone else.
Now, the Celtics have done their best publicly to make clear that the proposed trade was about adding Giannis, not about dumping Brown.
"He's been amazing. He's been an amazing teammate and a great person to be around," Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens said, per Nick Goss of NBC Sports Boston.
Behind the scenes, however, Boston may actually be hoping to move Brown, even though Antetokounmpo is no longer an option.
According to ESPN's Shams Charania, the Celtics are "actively engaged" in trade talks to move Brown, and "multiple" teams are interested. ESPN's Brian Windhorst, meanwhile, believes that a trade is inevitable.
"He's gonna get traded," Windhorst said on Unsportsmanlike. "Brad Stevens came out and said many, many wonderful things about him, and respectful, and all that stuff. He never said he wasn't trading him, which he obviously could have done."
Now, the Celtics could try to smooth things over with Brown and offer him a contract when he's eligible on July 26. If they're leaning toward a trade, though, they had better make that decision quickly.
The reality is that the NBA isn't going to wait to see what Boston does next. We've already seen the Heat land their superstar in Antetokounmpo. We've also seen the Minnesota Timberwolves make a win-now trade by acquiring LaMelo Ball in a deal with the Charlotte Hornets.
More agreements will be made in the coming days, and the free-agent negotiation period will open on Tuesday. Once it does, teams will start filling voids even more rapidly.
The longer Boston drags its feet with Brown, the fewer interested parties it will be able to pit against one another in any bidding war. Brown would certainly still draw interest later in the summer, but once roles are filled and money is spent, the Celtics will have a tougher time maximizing their return.
Boston will also have a tougher time flipping Brown to fill a specific need later in the offseason, if that's the team's goal—which, according to Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix, it is.
"They are hunting a big man," one rival executive said, per Mannix. "And they are willing to trade [Brown] to get it."
If the Celtics are indeed hunting for a big this offseason, they can join the club. And if they're hoping to use Brown to get one, they had better do it before another preferred target goes elsewhere.
