Buddy Hield, Hawks Reportedly Adjust Contract Deadline After Aaron Wiggins Trade
After acquiring guard Aaron Wiggins earlier this week, the Atlanta Hawks gave themselves more time to address one of the veterans on their roster.
Per NBA insider Chris Haynes, the Hawks and veteran swingman Buddy Hield have agreed to push back the guaranteed deadline date on his contract "so both sides have more time to [flesh] out options." The deadline was originally set for Thursday.
Hield's contract for the 2026-27 season is partially guaranteed for $3 million, and he would've received the full $9.6 million if the deadline hadn't been pushed back.
The Hawks acquired Hield and wing Jonathan Kuminga from the Golden State Warriors in exchange for star center Kristaps Porzingis at the trade deadline this past season. The veteran sharpshooter played just seven regular-season games for Atlanta and averaged 5.1 points in 7.3 minutes of action. He made two appearances in the team's first-round playoff series against the New York Knicks, scoring a combined 10 points in 13 minutes on the floor.
Hield is potentially expendable after the arrival of Wiggins, who was a key depth piece on the Oklahoma City Thunder's 2025 NBA championship team. This past season, the 27-year-old played 65 games with 21 starts and averaged 9.4 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.7 assists.
The Hawks are also facing a deadline on Monday for Kuminga's $24.3 million team option. The team reportedly gauged his trade market, so his future in Atlanta is also in question.
The Hawks are hoping to maintain their status as playoff contenders next season, so it's safe to assume that this will be a busy summer.
