"I chose No. 4," he told reporters. "Just new beginnings, obviously me coming to D.C., I wanted to have a new number. So, previously wore No. 3 and I was the No. 1 pick, wanted add those up and got four."
Dybantsa previously said on the Gil's Arena podcast, "If they draft me, I do need 3, Trae. If they draft me. You never know, we gonna see in like five weeks." However, he clarified during a draft night interview that he was joking:
Young had some fun with it as well when he welcomed his newest teammate to the league:
Young also called Dybantsa after the Wizards selected the BYU star and congratulated him for being the No. 1 pick before hinting they'd have another conversation without cameras present:
They were clearly having fun with the situation leading up to the draft, but it has now been settled with Thursday's announcement.
Dybantsa thrived in No. 3 at BYU as an All-American First Team selection and the Big 12 Rookie of the Year who averaged 25.5 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game. He was unstoppable for much of his only collegiate season, and he figures to have even more space to operate in his first NBA campaign in Washington.
After all, he will be playing alongside Anthony Davis and Young, which means opposing defenses surely won't be as focused on him as they were at the collegiate level.
And if he needs advice heading into his rookie season, Young knows far better than most what kind of spotlight he will be under.
He was the No. 5 pick of the 2018 NBA draft after just one season in the Big 12 at Oklahoma. Like Dybantsa, Young was an All-American First Team selection and the Big 12 Rookie of the Year and entered the NBA with plenty of expectations on his shoulders.
Unlike Dybantsa, he got to keep his college number when he began his professional career.
Young was No. 11 for the Sooners and also wore No. 11 for the Atlanta Hawks. However, he is No. 3 now, while Dybantsa will be No. 4.
