New NBA Rumors on Warriors' Trey Murphy III Trade Talks Ahead of Draft Amid Links to Lakers, More
The Golden State Warriors are "one of many interested suitors" in New Orleans Pelicans star Trey Murphy III, per Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.
"Golden State has also been one of many interested suitors in New Orleans Pelicans forward Trey Murphy III, and the two teams have discussed concepts involving the No. 11 pick," Scotto wrote on Tuesday. "As previously reported by HoopsHype, the Pelicans have searched for a trade into the lottery and are targeting a player. Nate Ament has been mentioned as one potential candidate for the Pelicans.
"Before this past trade deadline, several teams, including the Warriors, Pistons, Pacers, Hawks, Trail Blazers, Spurs, and Lakers, called to express interest in trading for Murphy, league sources told HoopsHype."
Scotto also mentioned that the Warriors have had conversations with the Charlotte Hornets about dealing the No. 11 pick for the 14th and 18th selections.
The Pels' draft choice at No. 8 overall this year is now in the hands of the Atlanta Hawks, who acquired that pick in a trade with New Orleans last year.
Murphy, 26, has played all five of his seasons in New Orleans. He's broken out in the last few years and just posted average of 21.5 points on 47.0 percent shooting (37.9 percent from three), 5.7 rebounds and 3.8 assists. Murphy is currently playing on a four-year, $112 million contract extension that runs through 2028-29.
Rumors surfaced last Friday that the Boston Celtics could be interested in Murphy if they lost the race for Giannis Antetokounmpo, per Sam Amick of The Athletic. Antetokounmpo has since been traded to the Miami Heat, so it's conceivable the C's could be in the mix in addition to the other teams mentioned.
Regarding the Warriors, though, Amick gave a rundown of where they stand on the Murphy front during a chat Tuesday on KNBR 680's Murph & Markus with John Dickinson and Larry Krueger (h/t Florito Maniego of NBC Sports Bay Area).
"There is definitely a bunch of Trey Murphy noise," Amick said. "It seems pretty clear that he has also signaled a desire to play elsewhere. The market is going to be pretty robust. On the Warriors' side, my understanding was they did not see themselves as being in the mix.
"[The] Brooklyn [Nets] and the [Los Angeles] Clippers were mentioned as teams that were out front in that race, but I think the list is very long. I think that Detroit comes to mind. [With] Boston, actually, Trey is seen as a potential plan B for them if they miss out on Giannis, which they obviously did. So, Trey is going to have a lot of suitors, and I think that could be a draft-night deal.
"There was even a scenario floating around with Trey going to the [Atlanta] Hawks in a deal that would include the [No. 8 overall] pick, which would be a risk because that would be the Pelicans on the backend trying to recoup their own pick by giving up pretty good assets to get it. I'm sure social media would be kind to that trade, potentially. So, that's the Trey Murphy landscape."
Perhaps something materializes during the first round, which begins Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET from Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. If not, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Murphy head elsewhere at this point given how much talk there has been about him leaving New Orleans, a rebuilding team looking to improve upon a 26-56 season.
