New NBA Trade Rumors on Myles Turner, Kyle Kuzma's Bucks Futures After Giannis Deal With Heat
The fire sale could be on in Milwaukee.
ESPN's Shams Charania reported Monday the Milwaukee Bucks are trading Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis to the Miami Heat. The move effectively resigns the organization to a rebuild, so additional deals could be forthcoming.
Michael Scotto of HoopsHype reported Tuesday that Myles Turner and Kyle Kuzma could both be trade chips. On Turner, he pointed to past interest from the Charlotte Hornets, New Orleans Pelicans and Los Angeles Lakers while positing the Boston Celtics could use him in their frontcourt.
Sportsnet's Michael Grange threw the Toronto Raptors into the mix for the two-time NBA block champion as he'd be a more versatile center than Jakob Poeltl.
Before the NBA's draft lottery reforms, the Bucks may have had a harder time moving Turner and/or Kuzma.
Turner makes $54.4 million over the next two years and has a $29.1 million player option for 2028-29. Kuzma has a $20.5 million expiring salary in the upcoming season.
But the new lottery forms have almost flipped what used to be the conventional wisdom. Now, a rebuilding team is almost more incentivized to chase a .500 finish over losing as many games as possible.
The new market inefficiency is finding players who are good but not too good to catapult you into the postseason. Turner and Kuzma could both fall under that category.
Turner averaged 11.9 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.6 blocks in his first year with the Bucks. He remained a proficient stretch big, hitting 38.3 percent of his long-range jumpers.
Kuzma shot a career-high 49.2 percent from the field this past year. Even assuming he regresses more to his lifetime number (45.3 percent), he's a proven option as a rebounder and secondary scorer.
It's doubtful Milwaukee could flip either player for a huge profit. The Bucks may not have to include much in the way of sweeteners to lower their payroll, though, which is a bigger goal in these situations.
Because of the aforementioned draft changes, Milwaukee can't go about its rebuild in the usual way once Antetokounmpo's exit is finalized. Trying to offload Turner and/or Kuzma would nevertheless be a natural progression from Monday's blockbuster.
