Giannis Trade Sees Heat Surge in 2027 NBA Title Odds, List of Top Teams Ahead of Draft, Free Agency
Sometimes trades in the NBA generate a number of headlines but don't do much to move the needle when it comes to championship contention.
That is not the case when a team trades for Giannis Antetokounmpo.
After ESPN's Shams Charania reported the Miami Heat acquired Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis from the Milwaukee Bucks in return for Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, three first-round picks, one pick swap and one second-round pick, Miami's title odds made quite the jump.
According to FanDuel Sportsbook, the Heat are +1,600 (bet $100 to win $1,600) to win next season's NBA title in the immediate aftermath of Monday's trade. Prior to the move, they were listed at +4,000:
Only the Oklahoma City Thunder (+250), San Antonio Spurs (+250), Boston Celtics (+650) and New York Knicks (+800) have lower odds.
Boston being so high is notable since Charania reported it "aggressively pursued" Antetokounmpo and was willing to offer Jaylen Brown and two first-round picks in return for the future Hall of Famer.
Pairing Antetokounmpo and Jayson Tatum would have been quite a problem for the rest of the Eastern Conference, but now the former will have a chance to play alongside Bam Adebayo in Miami.
The Heat haven't been past the first round of the playoffs since they reached the 2023 NBA Finals with Jimmy Butler leading the way. They are known for star power throughout their history with players such as Dwyane Wade and LeBron James leading them to the NBA mountaintop, and now they have a new superstar in Antetokounmpo.
And Las Vegas believes they are a much more significant championship threat because of it.
