Darryn Peterson Reveals Jazz Meeting After Rumors He Refused Workout amid Wizards' Draft Decision
Reports last week suggested that Kansas guard Darryn Peterson planned to only meet with the Washington Wizards ahead of Tuesday's first round at the NBA draft. The Wizards, of course, hold the top overall pick.
But on Monday, Peterson confirmed that he's also met with the Utah Jazz, holders of the No. 2 selection:
Peterson also said he wasn't "dodging any team" with his workout decisions.
Most mock drafts currently have the Wizards selecting BYU forward AJ Dybantsa with the top overall pick, including B/R's Jonathan Wasserman, who wrote Monday that "rival executives continue to speculate that the Wizards will take Dybantsa. And if they do surprise the league, it will be with Peterson, though sources say Washington has remained very tight-lipped during the process."
From purely a basketball standpoint, Utah would be an excellent landing spot for Peterson, who has a need at guard alongside Keyonte George.
Washington, meanwhile, just reportedly re-signed Trae Young to a massive extension and also has young guards in Tre Johnson and Bub Carrington on the roster. Peterson is good enough that the Wizards would make it work, but Dybantsa feels like a more natural fit.
Granted, you don't make the decision at No. 1 overall based on your current team outlook, you make it based on overall talent and upside of the players available. In that regard, only Washington knows how it has evaluated both Dybantsa and Peterson.
The Kansas guard's comments on Monday, however, suggest that he's made peace with the possibility that he won't be the top overall pick.
