New NBA Rumors on Luka Doncic's Stance on Future in LA Amid LeBron James' Free Agency

Scott PolacekJun 21, 2026

Luka Dončić still has two more seasons on his contract before his $57.4 million player option for the 2028-29 campaign, but his future is reportedly looming over the Los Angeles Lakers during an important offseason.

Dan Woike of The Athletic reported Sunday the Lakers remain "on the clock" when it comes to building a contender around Dončić seeing how he "is in the prime of his career and was traded away from a roster built to his specifications to compete for NBA titles."

Woike explained the star will be eligible for a contract that could be worth more than $417 million before the 2028 season but still added "I think there's an actual threat that he could have a wandering eye if the Lakers can't deliver on the plans they presented last summer."

That is particularly notable this offseason, as LeBron James is scheduled for free agency and Austin Reaves has a $14.9 million player option he could turn down to enter free agency himself.

James will turn 42 years old next season and surely isn't a part of the team's long-term plans around Dončić even if he does return on a short-term deal this offseason.

As for Reaves, Woike and Sam Amick reported in May that "Dončić has made it clear to the Lakers that he would like to continue playing with Reaves."

What's more, ESPN's Dave McMenamin reported on Thursday that Dončić wants "an A-list center" and listed Jalen Duren of the Detroit Pistons and Walker Kessler of the Utah Jazz as possible additions who "would satisfy" that request.

Much of Dončić's offensive game, at least when it comes to facilitating, relies on drawing defenders his way and finding rim-running bigs on lobs for easy looks. Adding a big man to protect the rim would also be important for a Lakers team that was just 20th in the league in defensive rating last season, per NBA.com.

At this point, Los Angeles is threading a needle this offseason.

There is surely plenty of short-term focus on James and Reaves, but the front office will also have to make sure to continue improving its long-term outlook as it attempts to build a sustained contender around Dončić for years to come.

Throw in Deandre Ayton needing to make a decision on his player option and Jaxson Hayes being scheduled for free agency, and it is a critical offseason in Los Angeles.
