Updated Lakers Rumors on Jalen Duren, Walker Kessler and More Free Agents to Meet Luka's 'Desire'
Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic reportedly has an idea for how to improve the team this offseason, and it sounds like the Lakers are motivated to fulfill his request.
According to ESPN's Dave McMenamin, sources said Doncic "has made one roster preference clear" to Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka and head coach JJ Redick.
"Luka's first and foremost desire is an A-list center," a source told McMenamin.

The brass in Los Angeles appears to have heard the 27-year-old loud and clear. Sources familiar with the team's thinking told McMenamin that there are "several restricted free agents the Lakers have already done their due diligence on." Detroit Pistons big man Jalen Duren and Utah Jazz big man Walker Kessler "would satisfy Doncic's directive to secure an A-list center."
Duren, who was selected for his first career All-Star Game this past season, is supermax-eligible after making the All-NBA Third Team. The Athletic's John Hollinger noted that even the lower max of five years, $239 million, "will be a challenge after the postseason he had." After averaging 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds during the regular season, he disappeared in the playoffs with just 10.2 points and 8.5 rebounds.
Kessler is coming off a lost 2025-26 campaign after undergoing season-ending left shoulder surgery after just five games. He averaged 14.4 points and 10.8 rebounds during his brief time on the court, and ESPN's Tim MacMahon reported on Wednesday that there's "a gulf" between him and the Jazz in contract negotiations.
The Lakers would be more than happy to swoop in and pry one of these young centers away from their respective teams, so it will be interesting to see how aggressive Pelinka gets with his contract offers this offseason.
