Blockbuster Kawhi Leonard Trade Idea To Reinforce a Western Conference Contender

Grant HughesJun 17, 2026

Kawhi Leonard's name continues to surface in trade talks leading up to the NBA draft, and he's even ascending to the top of target lists for teams starting to realize they don't have a chance to snare Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Heading into the final year of his contract, Leonard is a logical trade candidate for an LA Clippers squad that has the No. 5 pick in the draft and already signaled its readiness to turn the page by trading away James Harden and Ivica Zubac.

Meanwhile, the Oklahoma City Thunder are still smarting from their Conference Finals loss and might have several reasons to consider adding a championship-tested two-way star set to earn $50.3 million. Believe it or not, some of them might even be financial.

Let's lay out a trade framework that sends Leonard to OKC.

Before we get started, understand that the Thunder will need to get themselves under the second apron by trimming a little over $28 million in 2026-27 spending while also shipping out their two 2026 first-rounders on draft night for future picks.

Assume those things have already happened. That's the only way they'll be able to aggregate the salaries necessary to land Leonard.

Why Oklahoma City Does It

Oklahoma City Thunder v Los Angeles Clippers

Everybody seems pretty upset with Chet Holmgren's poor performance in the Conference Finals, to the point that they seem to have forgotten he played a critical role during an OKC title run just over a year ago.

That's the kind of "in" we need to get him into an outgoing package for Leonard, a battle-tested two-time Finals MVP who proved last year that he's still got something pretty close to his 'A' game. Leonard could effectively slot into a power forward role vacated by Holmgren to provide the kind of high-volume shooting that would make it impossible for defenses to cheat away from him.

Holmgren was a reluctant gunner against the Spurs and couldn't punish schemes that dared him to create shots for himself or teammates. The thought of opponents treating Leonard the same way is laughable; he's still a first-option superstar who'd require a top-flight wing defender's full attention.

Just imagine how much lighter the load on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams would be with Leonard in the fold.

Not only that, but the presence of J-Dub and several other lockdown stoppers would spare Leonard from tougher matchups on D, preserving his energy for even greater offensive production than he managed last year with LA.

Lastly, Leonard's expiring deal would provide financial wiggle room in 2027-28 when SGA's salary spikes to $61.8 million. While the Thunder should probably try to work out a new agreement if Leonard helps them return to the winner's circle, there'd still be some value in getting off Holmgren's rookie-scale max if the organization is no longer sure he's worth that money.

Why LA Does It

San Antonio Spurs v Oklahoma City Thunder - Game Seven

We've got to flip the logic on Holmgren here, substituting the straw-man doubt we needed for OKC to loosen its grip for LA's certainty that the DPOY runner-up is a cornerstone worth building around.

Honestly, the Clips are probably closer to being right about him.

Holmgren would provide a defensive backbone and a capable second option for point guard Darius Garland. Perhaps if allowed to spread his wings on O a little more, Holmgren would reveal new dimensions on that end of the floor. At the very least, he'd fit a younger timeline that would also include the No. 5 pick in this hypothetical.

Rather than letting Leonard walk for nothing after the 2026-27 season, the Clippers would have Holmgren under contract through 2030-31, which would only be his age-28 season.

Despite notching his first All-NBA and All-Defense First Team nods this past year, it feels like the perception of Holmgren's value is lower than it's been in a while. That makes this the perfect time for the Clippers to pounce, poaching a foundational two-way star for an aging veteran they probably wouldn't want to re-sign anyway.

Last but not least, Isaiah Joe is a legitimate 40.0 percent three-point shooter. He'd quickly become the Clippers' most dangerous bench scorer and might even start if the team could build enough defensive infrastructure to feature him next to Garland in an undersized but highly potent offensive backcourt.
