Draymond Green Talks Jonathan Kuminga Relationship, Says He Can Be NBA All-Star After Warriors Exit

Zach BacharJun 10, 2026

Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green revealed that he has high expectations for former teammate Jonathan Kuminga.

"I still think this guy has the potential to become a star in this league," Green told Yahoo Sports' Kevin O'Connor (23:32 mark). "I was super on the train of, 'Draft Jonathan Kuminga.' I still don't think it's a miss because number one, watch what he did in these playoffs off of two months with an organization and to have the playoffs he had. I think that's the start of something. Number two, that's my little brother and the relationship is tight. So if nothing else, I'm appreciative and that means the world to me."

On Feb. 4, the Warriors traded Kuminga and veteran guard Buddy Hield to the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for forward Kristaps Porziņģis.

Kuminga was in the midst of his fifth season with Golden State at the time.

He showed promise during his tenure on the Warriors and was a member of the team's championship-winning squad in 2022, but ultimately wasn't able to exceed the expectations placed upon him as the No. 7 overall pick in the 2021 NBA draft.

Kuminga averaged 12.5 points and 4.2 rebounds per game on 50.3/33.1/69.9 shooting splits in Golden State. He struggled to carve out a consistent rotation spot near the end of his time with the Warriors, alternating between their starting lineup and bench.

While Kuminga still dealt with some inconsistency after the trade, he also had several standout performances.

He averaged 12.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 22.1 minutes per game off the bench while shooting 47.6 percent from the field with Atlanta. Kuminga also recorded 13.7 points per game during the Hawks' first-round playoff series against the New York Knicks.

Considering he's still just 23 years old, it's easy to see why Green is still confident in him reaching his potential.
