Elton Brand Reportedly Out as 76ers GM, Jameer Nelson Promoted to No. 2 Front Office Role
The Philadelphia 76ers reportedly continued to shake up their front office as the offseason approaches.
ESPN's Shams Charania reported that Elton Brand will no longer continue as the general manager of the Sixers and is now "working through a new role with the franchise and its parent company, Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment." In a corresponding move, the Sixers reportedly promoted assistant general manager Jameer Nelson to executive vice president of basketball operations under new president Mike Gansey, making him the franchise's No. 2 executive.

Brand, who played 17 seasons in the NBA with multiple stints in Philadelphia, had served as the team's GM since 2018. According to Charania, Brand elected not to interview for the president role after Daryl Morey was fired last month. He reportedly remains "well-respected throughout the 76ers' organization" and has been "fully supporting the team's ongoing preparations for the NBA draft."
Nelson played 14 seasons in the NBA before retiring in 2018. The Philadelphia-area native joined the Sixers as a scout and G League executive in 2020, and he rose through the front office over the past few years.
In addition to Nelson's promotion, sources told Charania that assistant GM Prosper Karangwa has also agreed to a multiyear contract extension with Philadelphia. Karangwa reportedly had "received interest from multiple rival teams over the last month."
The Sixers replaced Morey with Gansey, who had previously served as GM of the Cleveland Cavaliers. It will be up to him to lead the new front office as Philadelphia tries to keep up with the arms race in the competitive Eastern Conference, and Nelson's support in his new role will surely facilitate the transition.
