Warriors, Bulls, Bucks Among NBA Teams to Shout Out Trending '82-0' Game in Photos
If you are a sports fan who was online on Thursday, you may have come across some images of random NBA starting fives put together along with their expected record in an 82-game season.
The internet phenomenon is the aptly-title "82-0" game that allows participants to build a five-man lineup — one at each position — with players in the database dating back to the 1960s.
Fans weren't the only ones who got in on the craze, as teams like the Milwaukee Bucks and Chicago Bulls posted lineups featuring legendary players from their rich histories that would be projected to go 82-0.
The Golden State Warriors didn't go so far as to post a full lineup, but they did take notice of how many people were talking about Wilt Chamberlain and reminded people he was part of their franchise at one point.
The website that runs the simulation engine does acknowledge some of the shortcomings in its system. For instance, it notes the lack of defensive stats from previous eras make it so the engine can only estimate a player's impact on that end of the court.
It's also a little more complicated than simply picking five players. Each round of the draft requires a player to "spin" a wheel that pulls up a random team and decade, then you have to pick a player from that era for your roster.
Another wrinkle is there are two game modes, Classic and Hoops IQ, with the latter making things more difficult. Classic mode includes full player stats as you are drafting.
Hoops IQ tests your knowledge of players by not providing their statistical information. Even if you're a young person who has only known this era of NBA basketball, it's not exactly rocket science to know that Oscar Robertson or Wilt Chamberlain or Magic Johnson were good players.
But it is fun to figure out who the best collection of players that maybe aren't clear first-ballot Hall of Famers like that Bulls lineup is that would go 82-0 in a simulation.
