2026 NBA Draft Scouting Report for Izaiyah Nelson

Jonathan WassermanJun 19, 2026

Izaiyah Nelson earned extra attention after going for 22 points, nine boards and three blocks against Louisville in the NCAA tournament. He capitalized on the pre-draft process, standing out at the Portsmouth Invitational and then earning an invite to the NBA Combine.

While Nelson's offensive limitations are evident, his defensive upside has become enticing enough for scouts to envision him as a specialist.

Realistic Pro Comparison: Jordan Bell

Western Conference Finals - Golden State Warriors v Portland Trail Blazers

With little skill, Jordan Bell earned an NBA chance by maximizing his athleticism and playing with energy. Nelson has a chance to do the same in a play-finisher, defensive playmaking role.

Nelson won't get many touches offensively away from the basket. The lack of handle and shooting range will require the right lineup fit.

That said, Nelson should earn an opportunity to provide some bounce and defensive activity off a bench.

Strengths

2 of 3
South Florida v Louisville

Strength 1: Rim protection

Nelson is an impactful shot blocker who uses his length, timing, and athleticism to erase shots around the basket. He covers ground quickly as a help defender and can alter attempts even when he doesn't record a block.

Strength 2: Finishing

He's an explosive vertical athlete who finishes lobs, dump-offs, and offensive rebounds with authority. His size and reach make him a reliable target in pick-and-roll situations.

Strength 3: Defensive versatility

For a big man, Nelson moves well laterally and can hold his own when switched onto smaller players for short stretches. His mobility allows him to play an active role in modern defensive schemes that require bigs to defend in space.

Weaknesses

3 of 3
South Florida v Louisville

Weakness 1: Creating

Nelson's offensive game is still fairly limited outside of finishing near the basket. He is not yet a player who can consistently create his own shot or operate as a focal point in half-court offense.

Weakness 2: Shooting

His perimeter shooting remains a work in progress, which can allow defenses to sag off him. Expanding his range would make him a more versatile offensive threat and improve floor spacing.

Weakness 3: Passing

A career 5.2 assist percentage means Nelson isn't going to survey the floor or make a passing read after he catches.
