Wemby Explains Why Spurs' Lack of Experience 'Is a Strength' Ahead of NBA Finals vs. Knicks
Victor Wembanyama isn't worried about the San Antonio Spurs' lack of experience heading into a matchup with the New York Knicks in the 2026 NBA Finals.
"The lack of experience is a strength of us," Wembanyama told ESPN's Malika Andrews. "Because we could do impossible stuff because we don't know it's impossible."
While the Spurs' reserves include veterans with championship experience such as center Luke Kornet and forward Harrison Barnes, the majority of their playoff rotation isn't familiar with deep postseason runs.
San Antonio is the second-youngest team to ever reach the NBA Finals, weighted by playing time in the 2026 playoffs (h/t NBA.com's Brian Martin).
The Spurs' inexperience in the postseason hasn't been extremely evident leading up to the Finals, as they're coming off an impressive seven-game series win over an Oklahoma City Thunder squad that captured a championship in 2025.
As for Wembanyama, the 22-year-old is on the first playoff run of his budding career.
He has continued to excel in the postseason after earning unanimous Defensive Player of the Year honors for his 2025-26 campaign. Wembanyama averaged 23.2 points, 10.8 rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game while shooting 51.0 percent from the field and 37.0 percent from three-point territory in 17 playoff contests.
Game 1 between the Knicks and Spurs is on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. ET.
