The Dallas Mavericks will have a new home in a few years.
The Mavs announced on Monday that they "entered into option agreements for the potential purchase of approximately 104 acres at the former Valley View Mall site" for the construction of their new arena. Their contract with the American Airlines Center will come to an end ahead of the 2031-32 season.
"We believe in Dallas, and our priority has been clear from the beginning: keeping the Dallas Mavericks in Dallas," the team's statement said.

According toย Cole Sullivanย of WFAA in Dallas, the Mavs' choice of the Valley View Mall site comes after "months of debate over the future location of the franchise and heated discussions over whether Dallas should tear down its City Hall to make way for the team to build a new arena in its place." The Mavs reportedly "have long maintained they wanted to remain inside the city limits."
The team's statement added that the plan is to "create a vibrant mixed-use destination anchored by a state-of-the-art arena, along with restaurants, entertainment options, public green spaces and family-friendly experiences."
The Mavs went 26-56 this season and missed the playoffs for the second straight year. The team hired Masai Ujiri as its new president of basketball operations, and he made a swift move to fire head coach Jason Kidd.
Dallas' future is centered around 2025 No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg, who was named NBA Rookie of the Year this season. Star point guard Kyrie Irving is also returning after missing the entire 2025-26 season while recovering from a torn ACL, but there's a chance he could be traded as the team's rebuild continues.
Fans in Dallas will certainly be pleased that the Mavs are staying put, and they hope the future is bright with Flagg leading the way.
