Ex-Spurs Player Gives Knicks Intel on Wemby Matchup Ahead of 2026 NBA Finals
Jeremy Sochan might take on the role of assistant coach for the New York Knicks during their NBA Finals matchup against Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs.
After all, Sochan had been with the Spurs since they selected him with the No. 9 overall pick of the 2022 NBA draft until they parted ways this season. He then joined the Knicks and believes he can help his teammates figure out how to at least slow down his former teammate.
"Whether I'm playing or not, it's important to feed all the information I have. And I think I know quite a lot," Sochan told Jared Schwartz of the New York Post.ย
"Being that tall [Wembanyama] gets tired. Give him different looks and [not beat him up but] be very physical, and make him run. And he's gonna get tired, he's gonna have to take some plays off in my opinion."
While Sochan has more insight than most after he was Wembanyama's teammate for approximately 2.5 seasons, the Knicks surely won't be the first team to attempt to fatigue the big man with a combination of physical play and running.
And it hasn't worked yet.
The Defensive Player of the Year and All-NBA First-Team selection is averaging 23.2 points, 10.8 rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game while shooting 51 percent from the field and 37 percent from deep during the playoffs.
He took home the Western Conference Finals MVP award after his team's victory over the reigning-champion Oklahoma City Thunder and exploded for 41 points and 24 rebounds in the dramatic Game 1 double-overtime win.
As for Sochan, he has appeared in just five postseason games while averaging 4.6 minutes per appearance. He likely won't play a significant role in the on-court action, so his insight into the Wembanyama matchup is where he can provide the most value for the Knicks.
