Deion Sanders Shades Jaguars for Not Asking Him How to Coach Travis Hunter After 2025 NFL Draft

Mike ChiariMay 16, 2026

Pro Football Hall of Fame cornerback and University of Colorado head football coach Deion Sanders expressed confusion this week regarding the Jacksonville Jaguars not reaching out to him for insight into coaching Travis Hunter last year.

During an appearance on The Barbershop with Garrett Bush (h/t Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio), Sanders gave his thoughts on the lack of contact between himself and the Jags after Jacksonville selected Hunter second overall in the 2025 NFL draft.

"Even a guy like Travis Hunter, being drafted to Jacksonville, and I've had him for the last three [years], don't you think you would want to talk to me to let me know, to ask me how—what gets him going and what backs him off and, and what, like, you wouldn't want to know that," Sanders asked.

Hunter began his college career at FCS Jackson State playing under Sanders, and he followed him to Colorado when Coach Prime got the job there in 2023.

Over his two seasons at Colorado, Hunter was highly productive as a two-way player, seeing significant action at both wide receiver and cornerback.

In 2024, Hunter recorded 96 receptions for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns, while also registering 36 tackles, four interceptions and 11 passes defended en route to winning the Heisman Trophy.

The Jaguars moved up to No. 2 overall in the 2025 draft to select Hunter, and while he saw action on both sides of the ball as a rookie, injuries limited him to just seven games.

In those seven contests, Hunter finished with 28 catches for 298 yards and one touchdown, plus 15 tackles and three passes defended.

Appearing this month on the Rich Eisen Show (h/t NFL.com's Nick Shook), Jaguars general manager James Gladstone confirmed that Hunter will be a two-way player again in 2026, but with a greater emphasis on cornerback.

Sanders seemed to unlock the secret formula to get Hunter to perform at a high level at both wide receiver and corner in college, so perhaps Jags head coach Liam Coen would benefit from having a conversation with him.

Coach Prime suggested that hasn't happened, though, and if it didn't take place during Hunter's rookie season, it is fair to wonder if the ship has sailed.
