NFL Exec Says Dan Quinn's Staff May be on Hot Seat After Evaluating Commanders' Future, Aiyuk Buzz

Following a disappointing performance in 2025, Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn and his staff reportedly may need to turn things around significantly in order to keep their jobs beyond 2026.

According to ESPN's John Keim, an anonymous former executive said the Commanders' staff "could be coaching for their futures" next season.

Keim provided that tidbit as part of a discussion about San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and the possibility of him joining the Commanders prior to the 2026 season.

After tearing his ACL in 2024, Aiyuk was expected to return at some point during the 2025 season, but the 49ers placed him on the reserve/left team list in December, and he ended up missing the entire season.

Niners general manager John Lynch told reporters in January that Aiyuk had "played his last snap" with the franchise, but the 49ers have yet to release or trade him.

Keim noted that the 49ers are in no rush to make a move on Aiyuk since they want to see if they can get anything for him.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported last month that the Commanders are expected to have "significant interest" in Aiyuk, but they are waiting for the 49ers to release him:

While it is fair to wonder how impactful Aiyuk would be after missing all of last season, he isn't too far removed from racking up a career-high 1,342 receiving yards in 2023.

He would also fill a massive area of need for the Commanders, who don't have an established WR2 to complement Terry McLaurin. As of now, the candidates to be quarterback Jayden Daniels' No. 2 wideout are rookie third-round pick Antonio Williams, Luke McCaffrey, Dyami Brown, Van Jefferson, Treylon Burks and Jaylin Lane.

Daniels is coming off an injury-plagued season, which is a big reason why the Commanders were just 5-12 last season after going 12-5 and reaching the NFC Championship Game in 2024.

Bursting onto the scene as a rookie, Daniels won NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors and seemed poised to be the league's next superstar.

However, injuries limited him to seven games last season, and Washington was among the worst teams in the league as a result.

Quinn's first season on the job was in 2024, and he helped lead the Commanders to their first playoff appearance since 2020 and their first winning record since 2016.

One might assume that would buy him and his staff some time to right the ship after last season's disaster, but Keim's report suggests the Commanders' front office could have a quick trigger if things go awry once again in 2026.
