Canucks Promote Henrik, Daniel Sedin, Announce New GM Hire After Patrik Allvin's Exit

The two highest-scoring players in Vancouver Canucks history will now be tasked with leading the team into its upcoming rebuild.

Canucks legends Henrik and Daniel Sedin have been promoted to co-presidents of hockey operations, Sportsnet reported Thursday.

The Sedin brothers had served the organization as special advisors and development coaches since 2021.

They will now take over the front office alongside another former Canucks player in Ryan Johnson, who Sportsnet reports has been promoted from assistant general manager to GM.

The Canucks fired former general manager Patrick Allvin in April after three and a half seasons and an NHL-worst 25-49-8 finish to the 2025-26 campaign.

Former president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford stepped down from his position as president of hockey operations in May, although he said at the time he would remain with the team as an advisor and alternate governor.

Henrik and Daniel Sedin retired after the 2017-18 season as the only two Canucks players to record more than 1,000 points for the franchise.

Henrik stepped away as the franchise's points leader with 1,070 points (240 goals, 830 assists), while Daniel departed as the Canucks' leading goalscorer with 393 goals (648 assists, 1,041 points).

Both skated in more than 1,300 games over 17 years with the franchise before retiring.

The Sedin brothers rejoined the Canucks as special advisors to former general manager Jim Benning ahead of the 2021-22 season.

The Sedins then moved to the player development department after Allvin took over ahead of the 2022-23 campaign.

The brothers have seen their roles in the organization slowly expand since then. The Canucks announced ahead of the 2024-25 season the Sedins would be "more involved in the day-to-day coaching activities" with both the NHL team and their AHL affiliate, the Abbotsford Canucks.

Johnson overlapped with the Sedin twins for two seasons as a player for the Canucks from 2008 to 2010.

He rejoined the organization as a player development consultant ahead of the 2013-14 season, then was promoted to director of player development and general manager of the Canucks' AHL affiliate in 2017.

Johnson was promoted again to assistant general manager of the Canucks, while retaining his title as Abbotsford's GM, ahead of the 2024-25 season. Abbotsford went on to win a Calder Cup in 2025.

He will now take over the Canucks' GM job despite the organization reportedly eyeing Evan Gold, general manager of the Boston Bruins' AHL affiliate, for the position.

The Canucks have a very different outlook now than when Johnson and the Sedin twins were first climbing the ranks of the front office.

As recently as the 2023-24 campaign, the Canucks were a 50-win team buoyed by a Norris Trophy winner in Quinn Hughes, an 100-point forward in J.T. Miller and up-and-coming stars in center Elias Petterson and goaltender Thatcher Demko.

The following two seasons saw a reported split between Miller and Pettersson, followed by the departures of both Miller and Hughes while Pettersson's production dropped and Demko battled injuries.

The Canucks received another blow when a few unlucky bounces in the 2026 NHL draft lottery saw the team slide down two spots to No. 3, likely missing out on the chance to draft a top prospect like Gavin McKenna.

The Sedin brothers and Johnson will now be tasked with rebuilding multiple facets of the organization, ranging from roster management to resolving the Canucks' status as the NHL's only team without a practice facility, in order to help Vancouver bounce back from one of the least successful seasons in 55 years of franchise history.
