MLB, Players' Association Reportedly Begin CBA Talks amid Salary Cap Debate, Potential 2027 Lockout

Scott PolacekMay 12, 2026

Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association reportedly took a step Tuesday in the efforts to avoid a 2027 lockout.

ESPN's Jeff Passan reported officials from both sides held a face-to-face meeting in New York to "officially open up collective bargaining talks a little more than six months before the expiration of the game's labor deal" on Dec. 1.

Neither side made an official proposal but instead offered presentations in an effort to get the ball rolling on discussions. According to Passan, the league plans on pursuing a salary cap, which is something "players staunchly oppose."

The disagreement on that issue in particular could lead to the league locking out the players and jeopardizing the 2027 campaign.

There is plenty of time to come to terms on a deal, although Passan reported "the chasm between the sides remains significant."

More than just the start of the 2027 season could be hanging in the balance. A lockout would bring the sport's building momentum that it has seen from the World Baseball Classic, the automated balls and strikes system, and the pitch clock, among other things, to a screeching halt.

Passan pointed out MLB has enjoyed soaring television ratings this season and is on pace to set revenue records. That could give the league strong negotiating power for its next television rights deal with the current one set to expire after the 2028 season, although a lockout could hurt those efforts as well.

There is plenty of incentive to get a deal done with all that as backdrop. Passan also reported Congress could get involved if a lockout lasts into the spring and threatens the season, so perhaps that can also serve as a motivational tactic for the two sides to agree on something to avoid outside interference.

While the two sides will surely discuss a number of topics in an effort to form a new collective bargaining agreement, everything comes back to the salary cap issue.

FanGraphs lists the Los Angeles Dodgers' projected payroll for the 2026 season at $398 million, which stands in stark contrast to the Miami Marlins' $74 million total. The league and team owners believe a salary cap and floor is necessary to close those gaps.

However, the union highlighted teams such as the Milwaukee Brewers, Cleveland Guardians and Tampa Bay Rays who have enjoyed success as proof more than just payroll difference goes into winning and losing.

Teams could also choose to spend more money to become more competitive even if there isn't a cap and floor system in place.

While it is not realistic to expect smaller markets to spend an equal amount of money as the Dodgers and New York Mets, there is opportunity to increase payroll. After all, there is a revenue sharing system in place across the league, and every single team is worth more than $1 billion in valuation, per Forbes.

Throw in the potential windfall from a new television rights contract when the current one expires, especially given the momentum around the league, and some of the teams on the lower end of the spending list could justify higher expenditures.

Alas, it seems like a prolonged battle regarding a salary cap seems to be in store, and the two sides took an early step in the discussions with this meeting.
