Jets Talking to Several Veteran QBs amid Russell Wilson Rumors, Says Aaron Glenn
New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn indicated Friday that the organization is doing its due diligence in terms of finding a backup quarterback for Geno Smith.
According to ESPN's Rich Cimini, Glenn said the Jets are in contact with a "number of veteran quarterbacks," although he also noted that he is "happy" with the current state of the quarterback room.
Additionally, Glenn said he had no update to give on where things stand between the Jets and free-agent quarterback Russell Wilson.
On Wednesday, Wilson told the New York Post that he is weighing his options for the upcoming season, as he has an offer from the Jets, as well as an offer to work in TV:
Andrew Marchand of The Athletic reported last week that Wilson was in "deep talks" to transition into a TV role with The NFL Today on CBS being the most likely landing spot.
After finishing 3-14 last season and missing the playoffs for a 15th straight year, the Jets shook up their quarterback depth chart by trading Justin Fields to the Kansas City Chiefs and letting Tyrod Taylor leave in free agency.
The Jets also brought in a new starting quarterback, acquiring Smith and a seventh-round pick from the Las Vegas Raiders for a sixth-round pick.
For Smith, it marks a return to where it all began, as the Jets selected him in the second round of the 2013 NFL draft.
While Smith is the unquestioned starter, there is a lack of proven options behind him currently.
The Jets have three other quarterbacks on the roster in rookie fourth-round pick Cade Klubnik, Brady Cook and Bailey Zappe.
Cook went 0-4 in four starts as a rookie last season, while Zappe is 4-5 in nine career starts with the New England Patriots and Cleveland Browns.
While success has been fleeting for Wilson over the past four seasons with the Denver Broncos, Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants, he would represent a major upgrade over what the Jets currently have at backup quarterback.
Over his first 10 NFL seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, Wilson was a nine-time Pro Bowler and he went to the Super Bowl twice, winning one of them.
If it doesn't work out with Wilson, other free-agent veteran quarterbacks the Jets could potentially consider include Jimmy Garoppolo and Cooper Rush.
