New Aaron Rodgers Rumors on Timeline for Steelers Decision amid Retirement, Contract Buzz
The Pittsburgh Steelers are still awaiting a decision from quarterback Aaron Rodgers, and they reportedly could get their answer this weekend.
The veteran will be in Pittsburgh over the weekend and is expected to sign with the team, 93.7 The Fan reported Thursday. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport noted that "no deal is in place" yet.
Steelers president Art Rooney II hinted before the draft that Rodgers would make his decision before offseason team activities began on May 18, saying that assumption was "warm."
"I wish I could tell you we're at the end of the discussion, but we're still talking to Aaron and he's still deciding what he wants to do," Rooney said last month. "I think we're close. He's kind of told us his time frame and what he's going to be up to over the next couple of weeks. I think we'll have an answer soon, let's put it that way."
Rodgers indicated last summer that the 2025 campaign would be his last, but he hasn't addressed his retirement much since then. After a solid season with the Steelers, it's fair to assume Rodgers has at least another year with him. He threw for 3,322 yards, 24 touchdowns and seven interceptions while leading the Steelers to the playoffs.
Pittsburgh also perhaps sweetened its offer to Rodgers when it hired his former head coach, Mike McCarthy.
There was some speculation about Rodgers potentially signing with the Arizona Cardinals, but those rumors were swiftly shut down by a handful of insiders.
With Rodgers now "likely" to play for the Steelers in 2026, the question is whether it will be his final season. He'll be 43 in December, so it's hard to imagine him playing much longer.
It would certainly make things easier on Pittsburgh if Rodgers told the team early on what his plans for 2027 are, rather than waiting like he did this offseason, but the four-time MVP might prefer to make that call in the moment instead of planning ahead.
