One Sentence Describing Every NFL Team's Potential Nightmare 2026 Season Scenario
Now that most NFL teams generally know what they and their competition will look like in 2026, we have a chance to look at some best- and worst-case scenarios.
In this case, let's go around the league with a half-empty glass.
Here's a one-sentence nightmare for every NFL team in 2026.

Buffalo Bills: Despite mixing things up at the top and bringing in a shiny new receiver, the Bills fall short of the AFC title game for the fifth time in six years.
Miami Dolphins: "Green Bay South" is a bust as Malik Willis struggles and Jeff Hafley loses a locker room in transition, leaving the Dolphins in an awkward spot for the 2027 NFL Draft.
New England Patriots: A Super Bowl hangover and a distracting scandal involving head coach Mike Vrabel crush a young team as Drake Maye and Co. are exposed by a much more challenging schedule.
New York Jets: Geno Smith and a talented offensive core do just enough to keep a team in desperate need of a new potential franchise quarterback out of a primo draft slot, forcing New York to contemplate trading away its three first-rounders for a roll of the dice atop Round 1.
AFC North

Baltimore Ravens: A young coaching staff is slow to get a grip on a veteran franchise, Lamar Jackson again fails to stay healthy and a 32-year-old Derrick Henry officially hits a wall as Baltimore misses the playoffs for a second consecutive season, increasing chatter that the Jackson era could be coming to a close.
Cincinnati Bengals: Zac Taylor wears out his welcome, and Joe Burrow is once again hit by injuries as the Bengals miss the playoffs for the fourth year in a row, causing talk that Burrow's time in Cincinnati could be nearing its end.
Cleveland Browns: Neither Shedeur Sanders nor Dillon Gabriel takes a step forward, but a revamped supporting cast and elite defense help the Browns win just enough games to cost them significant first-round draft capital to pursue a new quarterback.
Pittsburgh Steelers: Aaron Rodgers either backs out between now and the season, or he returns and puts together another "meh" campaign that prevents Pittsburgh from being a real Super Bowl threat.
AFC South

Houston Texans: With his fifth-year option now guaranteed for 2027, quarterback C.J. Stroud puts together a third consecutive dud season, which limits the team's ability to make a deep playoff run and leaves Houston in limbo next offseason.
Indianapolis Colts: Daniel Jones can't regain the magic that earned him a nice new contract, leaving Indy with two busts at quarterback, no real Super Bowl chances and no first-round pick in 2027.
Jacksonville Jaguars: After a breakout run in the second half of 2025, significant regression or another major injury for Trevor Lawrence would constitute a nightmare change of fortune for a team with just one playoff win since 2018.
Tennessee Titans: It quickly becomes obvious that the Titans didn't do enough to bolster Cam Ward's supporting cast, and he fails to improve following an awful rookie campaign, leaving the team to navigate another top-five draft pick with some intriguing quarterbacks in the 2027 draft class.
AFC West

Denver Broncos: Following a ho-hum sophomore campaign, Bo Nix follows the path of Stroud and regresses further in Year 3 as the Broncos are surpassed by the rising Chargers and overshadowed by the exciting Raiders in the AFC West.
Kansas City Chiefs: Patrick Mahomes either misses significant time or simply struggles with a deteriorating supporting cast, as he often has in recent years, and the Chiefs are left wondering where to go following another non-playoff season.
Las Vegas Raiders: There's room for top pick Fernando Mendoza to struggle for this rebuilding team, but steps backward for developing core members Ashton Jeanty and Brock Bowers would be the opposite of a dream for Las Vegas.
Los Angeles Chargers: Jim Harbaugh and Mike McDaniel butt heads, and a rejigged line backfires on Justin Herbert as the Chargers fail to win a playoff game for the third consecutive year under Harbaugh.
NFC East

Dallas Cowboys: Major changes don't fix a defensive unit that surrendered a league-high 30.1 points per game last season, and Dallas misses the playoffs for a third year in a row, continuing to waste the offense's window.
New York Giants: More tape on Jaxson Dart leads to a sophomore slump for the 2025 first-round pick, leaving the Giants in a tough spot following a fourth consecutive non-playoff season.
Philadelphia Eagles: Saquon Barkley continues to decline, exposing Jalen Hurts, who struggles mightily with Makai Lemon learning the ropes as A.J. Brown's de facto replacement.
Washington Commanders: Jayden Daniels pulls a C.J. Stroud with back-to-back disappointing seasons following an Offensive Rookie of the Year campaign as the Commanders fall well short of the playoffs again.

Chicago Bears: With a full offseason to review the tape, the league figures out Ben Johnson's offense and exposes Caleb Williams as the 2024 No. 1 overall pick regresses in a non-playoff campaign.
Detroit Lions: A lack of offensive line continuity causes Jared Goff to hit a wall, and a stacked team proves it has been figured out in a second consecutive dud season.
Green Bay Packers: Nobody emerges as Jordan Love's top target, and a young offensive line fails to take a step forward as Green Bay proves that its five-game losing streak to wrap up 2025 wasn't a fluke.
Minnesota Vikings: A new environment doesn't fix Kyler Murray, and J.J. McCarthy solidifies his bust status, but the defense is strong enough to prevent Minnesota from landing a franchise-altering first-round pick.
NFC South

Atlanta Falcons: A new environment doesn't fix Tua Tagovailoa, and Michael Penix Jr. solidifies his bust status as Atlanta wastes another year of Bijan Robinson's prime.
Carolina Panthers: Quarterback Bryce Young fails to take the next step, and Tetairoa McMillan experiences a sophomore slump with limited support in another non-contending campaign for Carolina.
New Orleans Saints: Sophomore slump for Tyler Shough, period.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Baker Mayfield regresses, indicating that his decline in 2025 wasn't simply a down year, and the Bucs pick up where they left off with a 2-7 run to close out the 2025 campaign.
NFC West

Arizona Cardinals: Poor showings from young offensive centerpieces Jeremiyah Love and Marvin Harrison Jr. represent the worst-case scenario for this rebuilding squad.
Los Angeles Rams: A Rams team that was well-positioned to draft insurance at wide receiver finds itself without Puka Nacua and/or Davante Adams for an extended period, and that ultimately costs Los Angeles a Super Bowl shot in the crowded NFC.
San Francisco 49ers: Quite simply, injury luck even remotely resembling what they encountered in 2025 would be a terror for the Niners.
Seattle Seahawks: Sam Darnold comes plummeting back to Earth without top back Kenneth Walker III, and a Super Bowl hangover keeps Seattle out of the playoffs entirely.
