Tom Brady's Involvement in Fernando Mendoza NFL Draft Pick Explained by Raiders' GM in Video
Las Vegas Raiders general manager John Spytek provided insight into minority team owner Tom Brady's guidance and influence en route to the Silver and Black's selection of Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza at No. 1 in the NFL draft in a conversation with Omar Ruiz of NFL Network (1:49 mark).
"He's just always been a great partner to me and really to this Raiders organization and whatever we've needed him to do or be a part of, he has. And specifically when you're evaluating a quarterback and there's this much involved in it, and you have this opportunity with the first overall pick, to have Tom be a part of that is a unique and special part of the process."
Mendoza seemed like the obvious choice for the Raiders from Day 1. The Raiders, who went 3-14 last year, needed a franchise quarterback to lead them into a new era. Mendoza just won the Heisman Trophy en route to guiding Indiana to a 16-0 record and the national championship.
He's the clear QB1 in the class, and the B/R NFL Scouting Department big board placed him third overall among all prospects.
Brady, of course, won seven Super Bowls during his 23 years as an NFL quarterback, so he could provide much insight during the pre-draft process regarding his thoughts on Mendoza.
In the end, the Raiders made the move. Las Vegas has nine more picks left, though, beginning with No. 36 overall.
