Giannis Thanks Bucks Fans in Post After 1 of the 'Toughest Seasons of My Career' amid Trade Rumors
The 2025-26 season was one to forget for Giannis Antetokounmpo.
The Milwaukee Bucks star took to social media Monday and called it "one of the toughest seasons of my career" before thanking the fans for their "unwavering love and support."
Antetokounmpo was limited to just 36 games, and the Bucks missed the playoffs for the first time since the 2015-16 campaign. That alone would have made it a tough season for the future Hall of Famer, but the issues went well beyond the standings.
On April 7, ESPN's Shams Charania detailed "the fractured relationship" between the star player and the only NBA team he has ever known.
There were the offseason discussions in July when it became clear Antetokounmpo would have been fine playing for the New York Knicks if he wasn't in Milwaukee. Then there were discussions in December between Antetokounmpo's side and the team in which it was clear he was fine parting ways.
Yet the Bucks decided not to trade him ahead of the February deadline, which was a decision that was once again under the spotlight on March 15 when he suffered a hyperextended left knee during a win over the Indiana Pacers.
The team wanted to shut him down for the rest of the season as it became apparent they were not going to make the playoffs and could start focusing on the offseason and upcoming draft.
However, Antetokounmpo did not want to shut things down and maintained a goal of returning to share the court with his brothers, Thanasis and Alex.
The NBA even investigated the situation, and a league spokesperson said, "The investigation has found that the Bucks scheduled Giannis to work out ... in three-on-three scrimmages as part of his return-to-play process, but he declined to participate. There is a disagreement as to whether the team requested that Giannis participate in a group workout earlier this week, and the league is continuing to monitor the situation."
For his part, Antetokounmpo told reporters on April 3, "For somebody to come and tell me to not play or not to compete, it's like a slap in my face. I'm available to play, but I'm not in the game. I'm available to play today. Right now. I'm available.
"So, I don't know where the relationship goes from there."
He never did return to the court, and Milwaukee is now facing even more uncertainty because head coach Doc Rivers stepped down after the season. The next coach will come in with the Antetokounmpo cloud hovering over the organization with just one more season until his 2027-28 player option.
