Sunday Highlights

Celtics 123, 76ers 91

Boston didn't face much resistance to open Sunday's contest, beginning the game with a 22-9 lead and maintaining a 33-18 edge at the end of the first quarter.

The Celtics eventually led by 20 points with just over seven minutes left in the second quarter and the 76ers struggled to respond, as Boston held a 64-46 advantage at halftime.

The Celtics cruised to the win in the second half, leading by as many as 35 points.

Jayson Tatum finished with 25 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists while shooting 9-of-17 from the field for Boston.

Jaylen Brown also scored 26 points on 11-of-21 shooting.

The 76ers recorded 38.9/17.4/73.9 shooting splits as a team in the blowout loss, struggling to make up for the absence of star center Joel Embiid while he remains sidelined after undergoing an appendectomy.

Thunder 116, Suns 84

The second matchup of the day initially didn't seem as if it would become so lopsided, as the score was tied 12-12 to begin the first quarter.

The Thunder eventually started to pull away near the end of the first, taking a 35-20 lead heading into the second.

Oklahoma extended its advantage to 49-24 early in the second quarter and never looked back.

Phoenix wasn't able to recover, as the Thunder outscored the Suns in each quarter of the contest before wrapping up the blowout win.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander finished with 25 points and seven assists despite shooting 5-of-18 from the field. Jalen Williams also chipped in with 22 points and connected on 60 percent of his field goals for Oklahoma City.

The Thunder showed why they finished the regular season with the No. 1 defensive rating in the association, holding Suns star Devin Booker to just 18 points on 6-of-22 shooting.

Phoenix will now look to bounce back in Game 2 on Wednesday.

Magic 112, Pistons 101

The Detroit Pistons may be the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference, but the Orlando Magic controlled the first game of their opening-round series on the way to a convincing 112-101 victory.

The visitors had an answer seemingly every time the Pistons made a spurt and got the crowd back into it, and the result was home-court advantage swinging in their direction.

All five Magic starters scored in double figures, including headliners Paolo Banchero (23 points, nine rebounds and four assists) and Franz Wagner (19 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals).

Orlando's defense shut down Detroit's supporting cast as well, as Cade Cunningham and Tobias Harris were the only Pistons who scored in double figures.

Cunningham did what he could with 39 points, but it was not enough to overcome the Magic's balanced attack.

Spurs 111, Trail Blazers 98

The San Antonio Spurs' first playoff game since 2019 couldn't have gone much better.

Victor Wembanyama and Co. cruised to a 111-98 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers in Game 1 in a contest that never truly felt in doubt. The star big man was anything but intimidated in his first NBA playoff game and finished with 35 points, five rebounds and two blocks.

If it was an indication of what is to come throughout this postseason, the rest of the Western Conference is officially on notice.

Stephon Castle (17 points, seven rebounds and seven assists) and De'Aaron Fox (17 points, eight assists and five rebounds) played well in support, and the Spurs as a whole drilled 45 percent of their three-pointers in an impressive offensive performance.

Portland hit just 26 percent of its triples and couldn't keep pace.

Deni Avdija was excellent with 30 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, but Scoot Henderson (18 points) was the only other Trail Blazers player to score more than 11.

That isn't going to be enough to keep pace with Wembanyama, and that was clear Sunday.
