Oscar Schmidt, the legendary Brazilian basketball player and Basketball Hall of Famer who retired in 2003 as one of the most prolific scorers in the sport's history, died Friday at age 68.

Schmidt's family said in a statement he had battled a brain tumor for 15 years, according to the Associated Press' Mauricio Savarese.

"Oscar leaves a legacy that transcends sport and inspires generations of athletes and admirers in Brazil and worldwide," Schmidt's family said, per Savarese.

The Brazil Basketball Confederation described Schmidt in a statement as "the holder of a trajectory that redefined the boundaries of what was possible in a court," per Savarese.

Schmidt played professionally in Brazil, Italy and Spain from 1974 to 2003. He led the Brazilian league in scoring eight times while also representing Brazil's national team at major international tournaments including the World Cup, AmeriCup and South American Championship.

One of Schmidt's major career highlights took place in Indianapolis during the 1987 Pan American Games, when he posted 46 points to lead Brazil to a victory over Team USA in the final.

Schmidt also represented Brazil in five Olympic tournaments. He set an all-time Olympic record with 42.3 points per game at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, and also led the Olympics in scoring in 1992 and 1996.

He still stands today as the all-time leading scorer in Olympic basketball history with 1,093 career points for Brazil.

Schmidt was drafted by the New Jersey Nets in 1984 but never played in the United States, although that didn't stop him from becoming a childhood hero of Kobe Bryant's.

By the time he retired in 2003, Schmidt had acquired the nickname "Holy Hand" while scoring an unofficial total of 49,737 points across his club and national team careers. That stood as the unofficial all-time record until it was passed by LeBron James in 2024.

Schmidt was inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2010 and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013.
