New James Harden Rumors on Cavs Contract Decision and Trade Scenario in 2026 NBA Free Agency

Mike ChiariApr 17, 2026

James Harden is reportedly expected to hit free agency this offseason after the Cleveland Cavaliers acquired him in a trade with the Los Angeles Clippers in February.

According to Fred Katz of The Athletic, Harden is expected to decline his $42 million player option for the 2026-27 season.

The Cavs could sign Harden to a longer-term deal, but Katz noted that it would still be an expensive endeavor for an organization that needs to prepare to sign All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell to a new deal before he is first eligible to hit free agency in 2027.

Before a Mitchell extension is even reached, the Cavaliers are already in a tough financial position, as they were the only team to surpass the second salary cap apron this season, per Katz.

Mitchell and Evan Mobley are currently on max contracts, Jarrett Allen will have an $8 million raise next season, and it isn't yet known what the Cavs plan to do with Harden.

After posting the best record in the Eastern Conference last season, the Cavs weren't playing up to their potential before the Harden trade, as they were 30-21.

From that point forward, Cleveland posted a 22-9 mark, pushing it into fourth place in the East.

The 36-year-old Harden performed well as the No. 2 offensive option behind Mitchell, averaging 20.5 points, 7.7 assists, 4.8 rebounds and 3.1 three-pointers made in 26 games, while shooting 46.6 percent from the field and a scorching 43.5 percent from beyond the arc.

Harden's lack of playoff success over the course of his career is well documented, as he has reached the NBA Finals only once, back when he was a tertiary option behind Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

His career playoff scoring average of 22.5 points per game lags behind his regular-season average of 24.0, and he has a career playoff shooting percentage of just 42.5 percent from the floor and 34.0 percent from deep.

Harden has a chance to change the narrative this postseason, though, if he can help the Cavs improve their recent results, which include a first-round exit in 2023 and second-round exits in 2024 and 2025.

That could potentially compel the Cavaliers to re-sign Harden as well, but it is fair to wonder if they have the financial flexibility to make it happen.

Cleveland's playoff journey will begin Saturday afternoon when it hosts the fifth-seeded Toronto Raptors in Game 1 of their first-round playoff series.
