Giannis Reacts to Doc Rivers Stepping Down as Bucks HC in New Video After Regular-Season Finale

Joseph ZuckerApr 13, 2026

Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo was surprised to learn of Doc Rivers' exit as head coach.

The two-time NBA MVP called it a "shock to me" when informed by the media that Rivers had stepped down. He called the 2026 Hall of Fame inductee an "incredible coach."

Antetokounmpo's reaction aside, the writing was pretty much on the wall.

The Bucks had a .485 winning percentage with Rivers at the helm, and slumping to a 32-50 finish this year was impossible to overlook.

The 64-year-old's relationship with the locker room totally disintegrated as well.

ESPN's Shams Charania and Jamal Collier reported during one team meeting on March 1 that Rivers "started the meeting by imploring his players to look up his résumé."

"The session was among a number of instances that rubbed large parts of the locker room the wrong way and continued the theme of a seasonlong disconnect between Rivers and the players, according to team sources," the report went on to say.

Rivers subsequently confirmed he made the remark but asserted the anecdote was taken out of context:

In a new report published Monday by The Athletic's Eric Nehm, more details about the divide between the players and their coach emerged.

Accoding to Nehm, Rivers "called a group of veteran players together" after wrapping up a morning shootaround on March 21. He proceeded to tell them he "believed they had failed him this season and questioned the group's commitment, conditioning, focus and leadership."

One of the players in question told Nehm the moment was "when I checked out on this season."

The Bucks' problems went beyond coaching, and whoever succeeds Rivers will face a difficult challenge if the organization keeps chasing a title with Antetokounmpo. The supporting cast around Giannis isn't good enough and there aren't a lot of ways to make it much better.

But it became equally clear that Rivers isn't the right coach for this group.

Maybe Antetokounmpo really didn't consider that a coaching change loomed on the horizon once Milwaukee's season officially concluded. More likely, he was trying to be diplomatic and avoid kicking Rivers while he's down.
